Digital Impressions Q & A

What are digital impressions?

Digital impressions use advanced tools, known as 3D intraoral scanners, to capture detailed images of your teeth, gums, and other oral structures. At Mandana Mozayeni Orthodontics, the team uses the iTero® intraoral scanner to take digital impressions.

The impressions automatically upload to a special software program that your provider uses to design dental restorations like crowns, bridges, veneers, or Invisalign® aligners.

Traditionally, impressions were made using messy materials like putties or gels. Digital impressions are much more convenient and enable more comfortable, longer-lasting oral prosthetics.

What are the advantages of digital impressions?

Digital impressions provide an array of advantages, including:

  • Improved accuracy
  • Quicker and more convenient
  • Free of messy and foul-tasting putties or gels
  • Pain-free

Digital impressions are particularly beneficial for people with strong gag reflexes or sensitive teeth. The treatment process is hassle-free and requires no downtime.

What do digital impressions involve?

At Mandana Mozayeni Orthodontics, the team takes digital impressions on-site during a quick outpatient procedure. Before taking impressions, your provider conducts an oral exam and takes a series of digital X-rays.

After assessing the health of your teeth and gums, your provider gently runs a handheld, wand-like tool across the surfaces of your teeth and gums. The tool collects and feeds data to a computer console that creates a virtual model of your mouth.

Scanning your mouth takes between 5-10 minutes. When the process finishes, your provider uses the virtual model to design a restoration that fits the unique cusps and curves of your teeth. Once they finalize a design, they send your impressions to a dental laboratory that manufactures your restoration.

After digital impressions, when will I get my restoration?

Following your digital impressions appointment, it takes one or two weeks to get your restoration. When your prosthetic is ready, you return to Mandana Mozayeni Orthodontics for a second visit.

During your second appointment, your provider administers a local anesthetic and bonds your restoration in place. Then, they polish your teeth, remove any excess material, and provide you with care instructions.
